very bad things...

after about oh... a good two years of service my external hard drive decided to crash on me. thats a lot sooner than it should happen so it came a little unexpected. as of right now we've managed to keep it running and are moving things to other peoples computers. not sure how long it will hold out, hopefully long enough to get it all. it should still be under warranty, so i'm getting that sent to me. if i end having to buy a new one it'll run about $120 after rebate, so that would be just about all of the retirement money i have from wickes. oh well. i have to get back to moving things. i'll post the results later if i have time.

That really sucks, I really hope you can get everything out of it and get it fixed. When did you retire from Wickes? You aren't old enough to retire!

lemme raise the comment count -- drives are cheap these days, no? Can't you tear the external apart and install a replacement internal?

I haven't been reading your blog. I will now. Anyways, I just posted this on my cousin's blog, about computers and warranties - but I'll post it here too:

If they purchased it at Best Buy then the 4th repair shouldn't be a repair, it should be a new product of roughly the same performance as their last one. Or an upgrade if you talk knowledgably to the semi-competent employees. Otherwise, the policy should provide for fixing it. If you don't have an extended warranty though, I believe most comptuers have limited implied warranties which expire after about a year. Sometimes you can get them extended for a fee by contacting the manufactorer. I don't think they intend them to break, they're just complicated machines with lots of parts exposed to constant temperature changes (computers run hot, cool down, etc.), electrical currents, movement, etc. It's like running a car with a sub-par cooling system for 12 hours or more a day. Something's probably gonna give after 2 years.
